Pascal Amoyel
Pascal Amoyel est un pianiste et acteur français de premier plan. Ses interprétations sur scène de Franz Liszt et Georgy Cziffra ont assuré sa réputation à Paris et en Europe. Dans cette aquarelle, j'ai commencé par les contours de son corps et j'ai ensuite capturé son visage plutôt comme un saint et ses grandes mains. Enfin, j'ai ajouté un fond coloré qui convient à ses productions sur scène. Il a semblé me sourire quand il est apparu sur la page.
Pascal Amoyel is a prominent French pianist and actor. His portrayals onstage of Franz Liszt and Georgy Cziffra have ensured his reputation in Paris and throughout Europe. In my watercolor of him I began with the outlines of his body and then captured his rather saintly face and large hands. Finally I added a colorful background that suits his musical stage productions. He seemed to smile at me as he emerged on the page.
Pierre Laurent Aimard
Pierre-Laurent Aimard jouit d'une réputation mondiale au clavier, notamment pour ses interprétations de l'œuvre d'Olivier Messiaen. En le considérant comme un sujet de portrait, j'ai commencé à remplir la page avec son visage parfaitement dessiné au crayon, puis je lui ai donné, étape par étape, plus de dimensions pour refléter le musicien très sérieux qu'il est devenu.
Pierre-Laurent Aimard enjoys a global reputation at the keyboard, notably for his interpretations of Olivier Messiaen's oeuvre. Viewing him as a portrait subject I began filing the page with his perfectly shaped face sketched in pencil, then step-by-step I gave him more dimensions to reflect the very serious musician that he has become.
Emmanuelle Haïm
Emmanuelle Haim est une spécialiste du baroque qui joue du clavecin et dirige également. En tant que sujet de portrait, j'étais bien sûr décontenancé par ses cheveux auburn qui coulaient et, après avoir établi les contours du portrait, je me suis concentré sur son «aspect» dramatique. La création des couleurs de ses cheveux volumineux a donné vie à ce portrait.
Emmanuelle Haim is a Baroque specialist who plays the harpsichord and also conducts. As a portrait subject I was of course taken by her flowing auburn hair and after first establishing the outlines of the portrait I concentrated on her dramatic "look". Creating the colors of her voluminous hair made this portrait come to life.
Seiji Ozawa
Seiji Ozawa est le chef d'orchestre japonais hautement spirituel qui ne craint pas de s'engager dans les grandes œuvres orchestrales de l'Occident. Dans ce portrait, il dirigeait Mahler et était clairement absorbé par la musique. Il a dit qu'il étudie une partition si bien qu'il commence à croire qu'il n'a pas seulement dompté la musique, il l'a écrite. Dans cette œuvre en plusieurs étapes, je cherchais cette expression de crainte que l'on pourrait ressentir en voyant Dieu et je le plaçais dans un tourbillon d'émotion.
Seiji Ozawa is the highly spiritual Japanese conductor who seems to have no fear of engaging with the great orchestral works of the West. In this portrait he was conducting Mahler and was clearly engulfed by the music. He has said that he studies a score so thoroughly that he starts to believe he not only mastered the music, he wrote it. In this multi-stage work I was searching for that expression of awe one might feel upon seeing God, and I placed him in a tourbillon of emotion.
Ran Jia
Ran Jia est l'une des étoiles montantes de la folie du piano en Chine, mais elle est plus qu'une joueuse technique robotique. Elle est l'un des rares chinoises à avoir complètement absorbé le canon occidental, acclamé par la critique du répertoire classique ainsi que des œuvres de son père, qui combinent parfois de manière significative la musique de l'Est et de l'Ouest.
Ran Jia is one of the rising stars in China's current piano craze but she is more than a robotic technical player. She is one of the rare Chinese who has completely absorbed the Western canon, achieving critical acclaim with the classic repertoire as well as works by her father, who sometimes combines music of East and West to great effect.
Igor Stravinsky
Igor Stravinsky se prête à l'originalité du portrait aussi naturellement que dans ses compositions. Dans ce portrait, j'ai expérimenté la couleur du visage et donné à l'œuvre une certaine cohérence géométrique en plaçant ses bras sous des angles intéressants. Le résultat semble correspondre au grand compositeur.
Igor Stravinsky lends himself to originality in portraiture as naturally as in his compositions. In this portrait I experimented with color in the face and also gave the work a certain geometric coherence by placing his arms at interesting angles. The result seems to fit the great composer.
Herbert Von Karajan
Herbert von Karajan, le chef d'orchestre autrichien qui a amené la musique germanique à un plus large public, était le chef d'orchestre le plus fréquemment enregistré du XXe siècle. En tant que sujet de portrait, j'ai cherché à reproduire son regard sérieux et sa concentration intense. Le portrait a commencé modestement mais j'ai ajouté de la couleur pour dramatiser son personnage de podium.
Herbert von Karajan, the Austrian conductor who brought Germanic music to a wider public, was the most frequently recorded orchestral leader of the 20th century. As a portrait subject, I sought to reproduce his look of intense seriousness and concentration. The portrait started modestly but in the end I added color to dramatize his podium persona.
